HALF DAY RIDES |
More than a trail ride, it is a life experience.
Leaving from Merrijig Lodge, with a horse matched to your ability, if you are an inexperienced rider, we teach you how to trot and canter (there is always plenty of staff to help) or you can just walk along and enjoy the view.
Upon entering the forest you wind your way down to the Buttercup Creek through the Peppermint Gums and Candle Barks, you may observe a wallaby dash off through the bush or catch a glimpse of the elusive deers.
As we cross the creek your horse navigates its way over the stoney rock floor. Once out of the stream you are on the open plain of the Deadwood forest with its gentle upward slope to the highest point.
Its now time to head back into the eucalypt forest, past the old graveyard, yet another set created for the filming of the Man From Snowy River.
You keep your eyes open as wildlife abounds, sometimes kangaroos grazing on the rich creek flats, eagles soaring overhead or an echidna or snake crossing the pathway ahead of you.
After another river crossing its canter time again, you know your horse now, the adrenalin builds, and off you go, up the track over the rise and heading to the best mountains views. The walking group experience the smell of the eucalypts, the beauty of the wild flowers and wildlife.
Now the fun really begins. Your decision, to join the group who want a leisurely walk, or the buzz of a canter to the top.
At the top, while your horse takes a well-earned rest and you catch your breath, you see the mountains of the high country made famous in the film 'Man from Snowy River II' staring down on you, Buller, Stirling, Mt No. 3, the Pinnacle, Razorback, this is the real high country.
It now a leisurely walk back. As you enter the gate to the homestead it seems time has slipped away, you have experienced "the Man from Snowy River" country.
As you walk away you can hear yourself say, "Maybe we should do the weekend ride next time".
