Australia Day 5 Day Ride |
Departing from Mirimbah, we head out on our trusty steeds, up the Delatite River, popular amongst trout fisherman, crossing the river 15 times and providing some cooling relief on a hot summer's day. We travel amongst the towering Mountain Ash and luscious tree ferns then making our way up the river spur through the Alpine Ash to the gnarled Snow Gums and alpine meadows on the summit of Mt Stirling before making our way to our base camp at Razorback. Next day we head off for lunch at the infamous Craig's Hut where once again we take in the breathtaking views before heading off down into the King Valley where we camp the horses overnight.
The third day we ride up an old cattle track through beautiful fern filled gullies, back to Razorback. On the fourth day we skirt around the side of Mt Stirling towards Mt Buller to enjoy lunch at the peaceful Howqua Gap, then down the little used Corn Hill logging track to Pikes Flat where we set up camp on the pristine Howqua River.
The final day we follow the Howqua River to Sheepyard Flat via the old gold mining track with its views overlooking the river. On the way we pass the historic Ritchie's Hut, a great example of the cattleman's huts of yester year. On our trek, we cross the river 15 times with plenty of opportunity to jump suitable logs for those capable.
After lunch we visit Tunnel Bend, a piece of history from the Chinese involvement in mining gold in the Howqua Valley.
Finally the ride finishes at Sheepyard Flat. If you don't have a long weekend you can join us for 2 days, 3 days or the whole 5 days.
